This week marked the quiet passing of the 70th anniversary of the historic role played by a lighthouse keeper in Blacksod, who unwittingly changed the course of World War II when he delivered a weather forecast all the way to General Dwight D Eisenhower on June 3, 1944.

Funding of €1.35 million announced for coastal infrastructure

Rural coastal economies in Mayo received a boost yesterday (Thursday) with the announcement of €1.35 million in funding for harbours and coastal infrastructre.

Specific roads grants projects funding announced for the county

The details of a number of specific roads grants made by the Department of Transport for schemes in Mayo was announced recently. Minister of State in that Department, Michael Ring, made a number of announcements on the schemes. Each of the three town councils in the county in Ballina, Castlebar, and Westport will receive a block grant of €161,300. Eight Mayo roads will have been given grants under the Low Cost Safety Scheme, with €30,000 allocated to the Westport to Louisburgh road (R335). €15,000 allocated to Saleen Quay (R313-Belmullet to Blacksod road), €30,000 allocated to Corradrish (L1324-near Bonnifinglas, Foxford), €50,000 allocated to Bohaun (R323-Knock to Kiltimagh road), €20,000 allocated to Moyne (R334-Cross to Headford road), €3,000 allocated to the Windy Gap (L1721-Castlebar to Lahardane road), €21,000 allocated to Kilkelly to Lowpark (LP1304/LP1904). and €70,000 to Bonniconlon (R294).

Blacksod Point Challenge triathlon attracts three hundred competitors to Erris

The fog cleared just in time for 300 competitors from all over Ireland to descend on Blacksod for the highly successful Blacksod Point Challenge triathlon, which was won by Kevin Thornton of Base2Race who left the field behind him and broke the course record.

Funding for Memorial Garden welcomed

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring has announced funding of €7,500 for the memorial garden at Blacksod. This funding has been granted through Fáilte Ireland. This funding will be used for the promotion of this memorial garden.

Blacksod and Broadhaven Bays to be saved from sewage discharge

The long awaited construction of a wastewater treatment plant and wastewater pumping station in Belmullet moved a step closer this week with the approval of the Part 8 planning by the members of the Belmullet Electoral Area Committee. The planning for this scheme has gone as far back as 1994 and it has taken this long to come to the planning stage. The existing wastewater collection network in the area dates back to 1957 and is currently discharging untreated waste into both Blacksod Bay and Broadhaven Bay.
